Hi Steven,
Thanks for your call.
Cinder ( Gadwall ) is a very interesting C&N yacht and the first of 6 boats of 30’ from the same drawings. These wooden auxiliary sloops were designed by John Nicholson in 1939 and were inbuild at our Gosport yard when war broke out but none were commissioned until 1946. It is noted that 472, 473 and 474 were basically completed in June 1939, 475 in July 1939, 471 in August 1939 and 476 in November 1946. They were all built to comply with Lloyd’s + 15 R requirements. Regrettably, many drawings were lost when the Gosport yard was blitzed in 1942 but the drawings in the Southampton yard survived. When the Southampton yard closed in 1979 the majority of the drawings were sent to the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich. Unfortunately, the Museum did not digitize them and they are still saved in a warehouse in Woolwich, generally not open to visitors. We have an agreement with the Museum and we can order material and have it digitized for our clients in case you would look for more documentation of Cinder. Please find attached the available list of drawings in our archive and at NMM.
The Archive’s owners … (Removed for brevity) in my next email.
Do you own the lovely yacht? and in case, where is she based? C&N Gosport archive is wishing to update its files and we would be very pleased to receive photos of the yacht.
Best regards Enrico Zaccagni
